Pain in the Deck

I wish that I had taken photos of the "Before before" I spent my whole summer sanding and painting this deck.  These before pictures are just the before painting before pictures.
I sanded for a few weeks, got pneumonia because I failed to wear a dust mask.  Recovered from that and sanded another week and a half before I got to this stage. I was sanding while the kids were at school.  Mia came home and asked why I was coughing.  I told her that it was because I had been sanding and didn't use a mask, so I came down with pnuemonia.  She asked if I had sanded that day and I said yes.  She said, "Did you use a mask?" I told her I did and she said, "Well, I am glad to see that you learned something."

It took me 3 weeks, starting at 9 in the morning and ending at 2:30 in the afternoon, so I would be available when Jared got home from school, to get this deck painted.  Overall I am really happy with how it turned out.  It was a lot of work and it feels great to go out on the deck and appreciate all the hard work I put into it.

Don't mind all the weeds, that will have to be a project for next year.  Who am I kidding? It will probably be a project for the next 5 years.

Snake Charmer

This girl asks nearly every day for a pet.  She was delighted when she found this baby snake in the yard.  She asked Seth if she could have it be her pet and Seth said, "It can be your pet in the wild."
I have another picture like this only it is holding a spider.  Such a fun cute girl!

We have snakes like this and larger all over the yard.  Our kids couldn't be happier.

World's Greatest Mom

I am pretty sure these kids have decided that I am the World's Greatest Mom after this morning.

Jared got to wear pajamas and wild hair on Tuesday.  He was thrilled with what we came up with for his hair.

Gordon was so excited to have his face painted today.  It is spirit day since we have homecoming tonight.  He couldn't wait to wear this funny green hat we got from the Dollar Store years ago.  This hat has been used many times. Jared wore the red version of it to school on Monday for Hat Day.

Ellis wanted to copy Gordon and have his face painted "Exactly like Gordon's." We only have one green hat so I put some green face paint on my fingers and rubbed it through Ellis' Mohawk.  He was delighted.

Mia has strep throat.  She thinks I am pretty great too because I let her have a popsicle for breakfast.

Jared told me that he was offered cocaine at school today.  I asked him what he said.  He told me that he said no.  Then he said that at first he thought this kid was offering him a coconut treat but then he noticed that the kid was standing funny.  After talking to his friends a little bit he figured out that he was offered drugs.

We have talked to our kids adequately about drugs, I had thought but we never told them what the names of the drugs are.  I guess we need to have another conversation, further in depth so they wont' think they are getting a coconut treat next time.

Talk about wanting to pull him out of school and shelter that cute kid!

The Next Great Inventor

Mia really likes to invent things.  She is full of creative things she would like to make.  For her birthday she asked for some tools and some pieces of wood. She didn't want to use Seth's tools because she didn't want to have to ask if she could use them.
We take a different child on a "date" every month.  Since we have 4 children and there are 12 months, each child gets an official date 3 times a year. It is a nice time to catch up on the kids and let them know they are important to us.
Last month was Mia's date month.  The kids always get to choose what they want to do and then, as adults, we try to make it happen.  When I asked Mia what she wanted to do she said, "Well.  I would really like to go to the Junk Yard and choose some pieces of junk so I can make some inventions."  As luck would have it, the Junk Yard was closed so we had to settle on something else.
I took a few photos of Mia's latest (to my knowledge) invention.  It is a weight, no unlike a dumbbell.  First Mia asked if she could use this empty spindle that used to have string on it for our weed whacker.

Then she filled the center with rocks and put a piece of paper over the opening so no rocks would spill.

Finally she glued rocks around the bottom edge of the spindle.  It is so fun to see her walking around doing arm curls with this weight.
